Weruva Wx Phos Focused: Low-Phosphorus Options for Cats Who Need a Little Extra Support
If you have a cat with kidney disease, you’ve probably heard the word phosphorus come up more than once. Managing phosphorus intake is often an important part of nutritional support for cats with kidney issues.
That’s where Weruva Wx Phos Focused comes in.
Wx Phos Focused is Weruva’s line of foods, treats, and toppers made with naturally low-phosphorus proteins. These recipes are designed to give cat parents more options when they’re trying to reduce phosphorus while still offering highly palatable animal protein.
At Natural Pet Food Solutions, we carry Wx in canned formulas, lickable treats, and freeze-dried food, giving you several different ways to incorporate low-phosphorus foods into your cat’s diet.
Why Does Phosphorus Matter for Cats with Kidney Disease?
Healthy kidneys help regulate phosphorus in the body. As kidney function declines, removing excess phosphorus can become more difficult. That’s one reason veterinarians often recommend controlling dietary phosphorus for cats with chronic kidney disease.
Weruva created Wx Phos Focused specifically for cats needing very low-phosphorus options. The recipes use carefully selected proteins such as boneless chicken, tilapia, tuna, and egg whites to provide quality animal protein while keeping phosphorus low.
There’s another important consideration for kidney cats: they still need to eat.
Cats with kidney disease can sometimes become picky or lose interest in food. Having different flavors, textures, and feeding options can be extremely helpful when you’re trying to keep a cat interested in eating.
Wx Phos Focused Cans
We carry four canned Wx options:
Chicken in Hydrating Purée
Smooth, soft, and moisture-rich—a great choice for cats that prefer a purée texture.
Chicken in Gravy
A good alternative for cats that prefer a more traditional gravy texture.
Chicken & Tilapia in Gravy
Adds a little fish flavor while still providing chicken-based protein.
Chicken & Tilapia in Hydrating Purée
A smooth, moisture-rich option for cats that enjoy fish but prefer a purée texture.
The wet formulas can be particularly useful for kidney cats because they provide additional moisture along with highly digestible animal proteins.
Wx Phos Focused Lickable Treats
Sometimes you need something especially tempting.
We carry two Wx Phos Focused lickable varieties:
Chicken & Tilapia
Tuna
These smooth lickable treats are an easy way to add a little extra flavor and moisture. They can be offered as a treat, used as a topper to encourage a cat to eat another food, or used when you simply want to give your kidney cat something special while still being mindful of phosphorus.
The Chicken & Tilapia lickable, for example, has a maximum phosphorus level of just 0.05% as fed.
And because appetite can become an issue for some cats with kidney disease, a highly palatable topper can sometimes make a big difference in getting them interested in their food.
Wx Chicken & Tilapia Freeze-Dried
We also carry the Chicken & Tilapia Freeze-Dried Formula.
This is a particularly interesting option for cats that love the texture and concentrated flavor of freeze-dried food. It contains chicken, tilapia, and egg white and is made without grains, starches, fillers, bones, or organs.
It can be served dry, but for a cat with kidney concerns, we especially like the option of rehydrating it with water. That gives your cat the appealing taste and texture of freeze-dried food while adding valuable moisture to the bowl.
It can also be crumbled over another food as a tempting topper.
IMPORTANT: Wx Is Not a Complete & Balanced Diet
This is the part we really want cat parents to understand.
Weruva Wx Phos Focused foods are intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding. They are not complete and balanced foods for everyday exclusive feeding.
Why?
Interestingly, it’s because the phosphorus is intentionally so low.
Phosphorus is an essential nutrient, and complete cat foods must contain certain minimum levels. Weruva Wx Phos Focused formulas can contain up to 50% less phosphorus than AAFCO minimum levels, so they do not qualify as complete and balanced diets.
Think of Wx as a nutritional tool rather than automatically treating it as your cat’s entire diet.
Depending on your veterinarian’s recommendations, Wx may be useful as:
-
Part of a kidney-conscious feeding plan
-
A topper over a complete and balanced food
-
An appetite enticer for a picky cat
-
A low-phosphorus treat
-
A way to add additional moisture
-
A supplemental food when your cat needs more variety
The lickable treats should be treated as treats or toppers rather than meals, and the canned and freeze-dried Wx formulas are also labeled for supplemental or intermittent feeding.
Kidney Cats Can Be Picky — Options Matter
Anyone who has cared for a senior or kidney cat knows that the “perfect” food doesn’t help much if your cat refuses to eat it.
That’s one reason we like having Wx available in several formats. One day your cat may want gravy. Another day purée may be more appealing. A lickable treat can help encourage eating, while freeze-dried pieces can add a completely different texture and aroma.
For cats with kidney disease, the goal is often a balancing act: manage phosphorus, support hydration and muscle mass, and keep your cat interested in eating.
Weruva Wx Phos Focused gives cat parents another useful option for doing just that.
